As the seasons change, fall and spring can often bring flare-ups of a very common rash called perioral dermatitis. Perioral dermatitis can resemble acne, typically characterized by small red bumps around the mouth, chin, nose, and/or eyes. For individuals with skin of color, these bumps may appear flesh-colored. It is most common in teen and adult women. This rash can be itchy, irritated, dry, or flaky, though some people report no symptoms at all.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of this rash is unknown. Often, applying a topical steroid like hydrocortisone to the face can trigger a flare-up. Additionally, harsh or irritating acne products may also contribute.
What to do if you think you may have perioral dermatitis?
First, stop using all skincare products, including hydrocortisone, and switch to a gentle cleanser. Your rash may initially flare up, but this is normal. Resist the urge to reapply hydrocortisone! Second, consult with your dermatologist. This rash can take a few weeks or months to clear up, and sometimes it may require prescription medication if it doesn’t improve on its own.
