Psoriasis is
a long-term inflammatory skin condition caused by an overactive immune
response, which speeds up the lifecycle of skin cells. The most common form,
plaque psoriasis, appears as raised red patches covered with thick, silvery
scales. These patches can crack, itch, or bleed and are often found on the
elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
Psoriasis can also involve the joints (psoriatic
arthritis) or nails (pitting, ridges, or separation). Triggers include stress,
infections, cold weather, and certain medications. While not contagious,
psoriasis is chronic and tends to recur in cycles.
Management of
psoriasis is highly individualized. Treatment plans may include topical
corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, salicylic acid, or coal tar preparations
for mild cases. Moderate to severe psoriasis may require phototherapy, systemic
medications (like methotrexate or cyclosporine), or biologic injections that
target specific immune pathways.
Charlotte Dermatology offers all of these
options and helps patients determine the most effective long-term plan. We also
support patients with lifestyle coaching and coordination of rheumatologic care
for those with joint involvement. Long-term monitoring ensures medication
effectiveness and safety.
