What is it?
A full body skin exam is a preventive, head-to-toe
evaluation performed by a dermatologist to detect early signs of skin cancer,
atypical moles, and other dermatologic issues. These exams are especially
important for individuals with a history of sun exposure, fair skin, a high
mole count, or a family history of skin cancer.
During the exam, the provider carefully inspects
areas that are both exposed and hidden—such as the scalp, soles of the feet,
behind the ears, and between fingers or toes. Moles, lesions, and
discolorations are noted and tracked over time. Many skin cancers are highly
treatable when caught early, making this a cornerstone of dermatologic care.
What to expect
At Charlotte
Dermatology, board-certified providers perform full body skin exams in a
private and professional setting across locations in SouthPark, Matthews, and
University City. If any suspicious lesions are identified, a dermatoscope may
be used for closer examination.
In some cases, a biopsy will be performed for
laboratory analysis. Based on findings, your provider may recommend regular
follow-up exams—every 6 to 12 months—or earlier if you have a high-risk
profile. Education on skin self-checks and sun protection is also provided to
help you stay proactive between visits. These screenings are quick, painless,
and are one of the most effective ways to protect long-term skin health.
