A chronic skin condition that causes facial redness, visible blood vessels, and acne-like bumps.
What is it?
Rosacea is a common inflammatory condition that most often affects the central face—cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. It presents with persistent redness, flushing, small bumps or pustules, and sometimes visible blood vessels (telangiectasia). Some people also experience dry, irritated eyes or skin thickening around the nose (rhinophyma).
Rosacea can be triggered by heat, spicy foods, alcohol, sun exposure, or stress. While the exact cause is unknown, genetics and immune system factors are believed to contribute. It is often mistaken for acne or allergic reactions.
How is it treated?
Because rosacea is a chronic condition, management focuses on reducing flare-ups and improving skin appearance. Treatments may include topical medications like metronidazole or azelaic acid, oral antibiotics for inflammatory lesions, or low-dose isotretinoin in severe cases. Light-based therapies such as intense pulsed light (IPL) or vascular lasers can minimize redness and visible vessels.
Providers also educate patients on lifestyle modifications to avoid personal triggers. Care is customized for each patient, and ongoing follow-up is important. Rosacea care is available across all Charlotte Dermatology locations.
