A condition marked by excessive sweating beyond what is needed for body temperature regulation.
What is it?
Hyperhidrosis is a chronic condition that causes abnormally excessive sweating, most commonly on the palms, soles, underarms, or face. It occurs even in cool environments or without physical exertion. Primary hyperhidrosis is often inherited and tends to begin during adolescence. Secondary hyperhidrosis can be caused by underlying medical conditions or medications. The condition can interfere with daily activities and impact self-esteem. Sweat may visibly soak through clothing or drip from hands, making routine tasks more difficult.
How is it treated?
Treatment starts with identifying the type and cause of sweating. Over-the-counter or prescription antiperspirants are often used as a first step. For more persistent cases, options include iontophoresis (a water-based electrical treatment), Botox injections to block sweat glands, or oral anticholinergic medications. In certain cases, surgical intervention (such as sympathectomy) may be considered. At Charlotte Dermatology, we evaluate severity and lifestyle impact to select the most effective treatment plan and provide long-term support for symptom control.
