A viral condition that causes painful blisters or sores around the mouth or genitals, spread by skin-to-skin contact.
What is it?
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a lifelong viral infection that spreads through direct skin contact or sexual activity. HSV-1 usually affects the lips and mouth (oral herpes), while HSV-2 is more commonly responsible for genital herpes.
Outbreaks may present as small, fluid-filled blisters that burst and crust over. Some individuals are asymptomatic but can still transmit the virus. Triggers include stress, illness, sun exposure, and hormonal changes.
While not curable, herpes can be managed to reduce outbreaks and transmission.
How is it treated?
Our providers at Charlotte Dermatology diagnose herpes with clinical exams and, when needed, viral cultures or PCR testing. We offer antiviral medications such as acyclovir or valacyclovir to shorten outbreak duration and reduce viral shedding.
For patients with frequent flare-ups, suppressive daily therapy may be recommended. We also provide personalized counseling on outbreak prevention, safe intimacy practices, and ways to manage discomfort. Treatment is handled with discretion and compassion at all our Charlotte-area locations.
