What is it?
Vitiligo is a chronic condition that causes a loss of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, resulting in lighter patches of skin. These patches, referred to as macules or larger patches, can range in size—macules are typically less than five millimeters, while patches are more than five millimeters in diameter.
In addition to skin depigmentation, individuals with vitiligo may notice that hair in the affected areas turns white. This condition most commonly begins in a person’s 20s, often appearing on the face, hands, feet or arms. The condition usually advances over time, with an increasing number of skin areas losing pigmentation.
Vitiligo can occur in individuals of all skin tones, though the lighter patches tend to be more visible on darker or tanned skin. It’s important to know that vitiligo is not contagious and doesn’t pose a health risk.
How is it treated?
Our team at Charlotte Dermatology will develop a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your desired results. We take into consideration factors such as your age, overall health, the type of vitiligo you have, the affected body areas and the progression of the condition.
Our approach may involve the use of medications and medicated skin creams, such as corticosteroids, as well as light therapy, to improve skin color conditions. It is important to note that effective vitiligo treatments often produce gradual results, and some patients may require more intensive treatment to see significant improvement.
