An itchy, red rash triggered by allergens or irritants such as soaps, detergents, or poison ivy.
What is it?
Contact dermatitis is a type of eczema triggered by direct contact with a substance that irritates the skin or causes an allergic reaction. It can occur immediately or develop over time with repeated exposure.
Common causes include fragrances, metals (like nickel), latex, household cleaners, and certain plants. Symptoms include redness, itching, swelling, and in severe cases, blistering or skin cracking. It is not contagious but can cause significant discomfort.
How is it treated?
Our dermatologists in Charlotte diagnose contact dermatitis through physical exam and, if needed, patch testing to identify the allergen or irritant.
Treatment focuses on removing the trigger and repairing the skin barrier using topical corticosteroids, antihistamines, and emollients. Severe or infected cases may require oral steroids or antibiotics.
We also guide patients in avoiding triggers and using protective measures (gloves, hypoallergenic products) to prevent recurrence.
