What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

April 23rd, 2025 | By: Admin

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a chronic dermatitis that is found on areas of the body rich in sebaceous glands aka oil producing glands. These oily, hair baring surfaces include the scalp, face, ears, and trunk. The severity can range from mild dandruff to uncomfortable scaly/greasy/red/inflamed skin.

The cause is multifactorial and not completely understood. But is associated with Malassezia (a yeast/fungus) that is part of the skin’s normal flora. It is not due to poor hygiene. It is commonly seen in winter and spring with improvement noted in summer months. Common triggers include seasonal changes, stress, trauma, humidity, medications, and neurologic conditions. It affects people of all ages and races.

Diagnosis is typically made clinically based on the wax/wane history and distribution of involved areas. A biopsy can show nonspecific characteristics that are associated with the condition. There is overlap and similarity to other disease processes.

Treatment for seborrheic dermatitis may include OTC shampoos such as Selsun blue, tsal, and tgel. These are great for managing mild and chronic disease, specifically of the scalp. Prescription topical steroids and topical antifungals can also be helpful for flares, persistent disease, and specific areas of the body.

Together you and your dermatology provider can tailor a treatment plan to best meet your needs. If you think you may have seborrheic dermatitis, visit us at Charlotte Dermatology!
